Afraid

AFRAID

I am not afraid of illness.
I am afraid of losing the ability to move around this world that I’ve yet to explore.

I am not afraid of failure.
I am afraid of being too scared to try.

I am not afraid of pain.
I am afraid of being too numb to feel.

I am not afraid of the future.
I am afraid of missing my chance to make it better.

I am not afraid of being forgotten when I die.
I am afraid of forgetting who I am.

I am not afraid of death.
I am afraid of running out of time.
Of missing one more day to show how much I love you.

  1. I just lost someone last week. You just described her, and me, and everything I’ve learned from her. Thank you for sharing

    1. I’m sorry that you are experiencing loss. I used to think my greatest fear was the loss of a loved one but now I realize that what I truly fear is not having time to love them. How lucky are we when we can say we were loved, able to return that love, and able to share it with others.

  2. Beautiful poem, Clare. God knew we’d have many fears. Some version of the phrase ” don’t be afraid” is the phrase most often written in Scripture. One of my favorites is from Psalm 34: “I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.”
