On an upcoming trip, I’m going to be roughing it. I will truly be sacrificing some comfort. I will be…
traveling without a HAIR DRYER!
Don’t judge. This is seriously a sacrifice for me. If my house were burning down & I had to choose between my hair dryer or toothbrush, I’d grab the hair dryer. I have short, bi-polar hair & I just never know what mood it will be in from day to day. I look terrible in hats, so I can’t cover up a bad hair day. Hence my dependence on this large unwieldy tool.
I rarely travel with a hair dryer because I purposefully select lodging that has one. Conversations like this can occur in my household:
Eric: Clare, I found the most amazing cottage on its own private island, with its own private butler & masseuse & it’s half price right now!
Clare: But does it have a hair dryer?
So why am I choosing to go sans hair dryer this time? Two reasons: I fell in love with a hotel in Fussen Germany that meets all my requirements (except the hair dryer) AND I was recently chastised by my loving husband for being a diva. Here’s how that played out:
My husband coaches a 10-year old traveling baseball team & we recently went on a week-long tournament trip to Alabama. At the end of one day, hair dripping with sweat, face covered in melted sunscreen & clothing stuck in crevices I don’t want to be aware of, Eric & his brother say “let’s go outlet shopping!” I did not respond gracefully & they were not amenable to my suggestion to back track 45min to our condo & shower before going anywhere. I told them I’d be miserable & not want to try on anything looking & feeling like I did.
Which is when my supportive spouse took me aside & said “you look wonderful right now, stop being a diva.” And that is the moment I realized I sounded like a Kardashian.
So, I of course went shopping & bought a boat load of clothes just to prove I could enjoy my sweaty natural self & NOT be a diva. 😉 Moral of the story: no one really cares what we look like except us, & when we let go of that worry we become MUCH happier & more pleasant to be with. So if you want to be the travel companion that everyone wants to travel with, leave the diva at home.
