Having had our fill of castles & tourists, Eric & I were ready to escape into the woods. Lucky for us, nature trails & quiet walks abound all around Füssen Germany so despite the imminent threat of rain & a bum knee, we took to the trails.
We opted for the Füssen-Alatsee loop, which was a 10.3 mile walk from our hotel & took about 4.5 hours. The walk immediately began with some steep inclines which quickly brought us above town & into the woods. There were several routes we could have taken, all of which lead to the same lake — we chose the one that took us deeper into the woods. The woods opened up to farm land & then we arrived at the lake, which was smaller than I expected but very pretty.
Alatsee Hotel is situated on this lake & it was the perfect oasis for weary, wet hikers. The atmosphere was cozy, wait staff was excellent, & the menu was pure comfort food.
If you go, check Alatsee Hotel’s restaurant hours before you decide what day & time to do this walk. Their restaurant is only open Monday – Friday during certain seasons & hours are limited to lunch only.
The walk back to Füssen took us along paths with running streams & two more lakes (Obersee & Mittel See), past a very nice park & back into the southwestern neighborhood of Füssen which was adorable. This little area had cute homes, quirky artwork & the perfect walking paths for leisurely strolls.
To get there, find the supermarket on the traffic circle on Kemptener Strasse, take Morisse uphill through a small rock tunnel & turn right on Alatseestrasse. You’ll notice the town changes the minute you walk through the rock walls. The loop trail that we took began at these rock walls, just before you walk through the walls.
