I may have mentioned this in the past, but I REALLY LOVE researching travel! Sometimes my research patterns get a little neurotic & I’ll bounce from one continent to the next before settling on our next destination. I’m like an ADHD adult when it comes to travel, easily distracted & struggling to decide on one place. For example, my recent research for a 2018 trip went like such:
I ask Eric what country he wants to visit next year and he says Scotland.
I start looking up hiking in Scotland and immediately fall in love with the West Highland Way.
But the West Highland Way has long walking days, guaranteed bad weather, & possible midges. Hmm…
So I look for off the beaten track places & discover Knoydart in the Highlands. Lodging & trails & no tourists sounds perfect, until I realize you must have a car. Dang!
So I think to myself, “what is similar to Scotland but maybe smaller & easier to get around” — WALES!
Which is when I discover the Wales long-distance Coast Path, which looks amazing AND I’ve never heard of it AND we can do part of it as an inn-to-inn walk.
But the path is huge & I’m overwhelmed by how to pick what part to walk (because it would take at least a month to walk the whole thing). And I realize that Wales is best seen via…you guessed it…a car.
In the meantime, images of the Isle of Skye start creeping in & even though I’m pretty sure we need a car, I can’t help but dive in. So I find all of the remote hikes & family B&Bs & I pitch it to Eric with hope in my heart…
And that’s a definite NO.
Then it gets bitterly cold & snows in Louisiana, & I start dreaming about sun & warmth…
And Greece! But I know I don’t want tourists, so I look for islands that cater to the hikers & naturalists.
After reviewing self-guided walking trips on Crete & Cypress, I stumble upon a website that certifies hiker friendly hotels in Greece.
And that’s when I stumble upon Sifnos, an island known for great hiking & great cooking. PERFECT!
After your mountainous hikes in Austria and Germany, I think I’d be ready for some hikes on more level ground like on a Greek island or rural European countryside!
