Let’s Go to Banff…or not

Using Bear Spray Effectiveness
I might have mentioned at some point that I have a travel addiction.  That’s not an exaggeration.  I am truly a travel junkie.  You want to know how I know?  Because the first thing I do upon returning from a trip is…[you guessed it]…start planning the next one!  Eric is just as guilty.  On a recent drive home from Alabama, Eric said
let’s go somewhere for Labor Day!
Keep in mind, we’ve already got a 2-week trip planned to Germany & Austria this fall, PLUS a weekend getaway to Chicago in October.  But apparently we need our fix sooner than that.  So, I start looking at hiking options in Banff National Park.

Mesmerized by the surreal turquoise waters of Banff, I gloss over all the news articles that keep popping up about bear attacks and I barely take notice of the fact that hotel reviews in that area say “ask your concierge for free bear spray.”  Then Eric tells me there are certain trails in the park that require a minimum # of hikers, due to the high level of bear activity on those trails.  Am I undaunted?  Heck no.
My first thought is “so I guess you find the slowest hikers & ask them to go with you on those trails?”
No, what kills the Banff trip is my discovery that Banff & Canmore lodging rates during Labor Day holiday are worse than New Orleans during a Saints game.  Apparently there are a lot of other people who don’t fear bears.
So we settled on the White Mountains in New Hampshire instead.  🙂
